It’s rare to see a night dedicated purely to solo guitar. But the Guitar Lab, a new initiative started by guitarist Matthew Roche is just that. Open-ended stylistically but leaning more towards the jazz and improvised music scene, each guitarist shares the bill with one another and performs a set of music that can range from 20 – 40 minutes. The ethos is on providing a communal and friendly space for guitarists and audiences to connect, resulting in low-key performances that merge improvisation, composition and other people’s music. This is serious music delivered unseriously. It’s somewhere between a show and a work in progress, something familar, something unknown. It’s loose but also maybe not?
